Working With Child Products

Child products in the PIM will automatically inherit certain data fields from the parent product, but will require further enhancement to be ready to publish.

Ecommerce platforms require unique SKUs and this applies to Child Products in the PIM. be sure to fill out a SKU for each child you create.
The channel status for each child can be set independently of the parent, which means in order to publish to a chosen channel, both the parent and the child have to have that channel enabled.

This behaviour allows you to create products quicker underneath a parent while setting different publication rules for each child. For example, if you have a limited edition of a product and you want to have a private pop up store for your VIP customers you can save time by building it as a child under an existing parent, but only enable on your pop-up VIP store, leaving your main child products to publish to your regular B2C storefront.

Children can also have their publication status set independently of the parent product, but both must be published/online in order to sync to your channels. We've included a quick Set Online, Set Offline set of buttons on the Children tab to save you time.
By default, newly created child products inherit the name from their parent product. Since e-commerce platforms do not treat children as full products, they are still able to publish, however, it is a good practice to append each child with a unique suffix such as the option value combination that applies to them. It makes working with individual child products much easier.

Other Notes when Working with Child Products

You can edit a child product by clicking the name of the product or selecting the gear icon next to it and selecting edit child product
If you need to edit the option value combination for a child, click the gear icon and select Edit Child Options
Sometimes a given Parent Child Relationship will not be the appropriate schema for a particular product. To remove a child from a parent, click the gear icon and select remove from parent. Make note of the ID of child product as it is now its own product. Note that providing the children with unique names will come in handy to locate this product and allow you to publish it freely without running into duplicate name errors
If you created a child product by mistake, you can delete the child entirely by clicking the gear icon and selecting delete.
